Abstract

Abstract: With English language learners (ELLs) now the fastest growing population in the U.S. school system, it is imperative that we provide all teachers with the skills required to address the needs of linguistically and culturally diverse students. This paper examines one of the six California Teachers of English Learners (CTEL) programs approved by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) in January, 2008 which lead to certification for teaching English learners. The program offered by Alliant International University, a multi-campus institution based in California, features a unique combination of components that utilizes technology to make professional development training accessible to K-12 teachers dispersed throughout the state. The purpose of this paper is to present a model for an effective and economically viable e-learning program for k-12 teachers who serve English language learners.
