Abstract
Unlike students in the ESL setting, who always can find enough native English speakers to communicate with to improve their oral English, Students in an EFL setting, such as, China, never have enough English native speakers to practice their English. The use of internet-based desktop videoconference, however, has recently been evaluated as an effective medium for authentic communication in the field of foreign and second language instruction. This study will investigate the effectiveness and the potentials of using online audio-visual chatting to improve EFL students' oral competence. The paper is a work-in-progress, in which the authors will define the research questions, discuss the methodology, and address the significance of the study.
