Abstract

Multimedia Masters, a collaborative effort between the University of Houston's College of Education and the Spring Independent School District in Spring, Texas brought together middle school students and teachers and University of Houston faculty and graduate student mentors who worked together to design and develop computer-based educational resources. The 2002 project focused on the murals of John Biggers, a nationally recognized artist and art educator who created a number of murals in various locations throughout the Houston area. The students learned to look at and talk about art and ask thought-provoking questions about their environment and the role of art in public spaces. Students participated in field trips to the murals, conducted research on the artworks, used technology tools to gather data, and worked collaboratively with a partner and faculty mentor to design a multimedia-enhanced educational resource based on their investigations.
