Abstract

Matching ICT (information and communication technology) tools with educational needs is a continuing challenge as student needs, instructor needs and tools evolve rapidly. We report an exploratory investigation of the potential of synchronous desktop conferencing (SDC) for specific academic uses. Our findings include recognition that preoccupation with videoconferencing possibilities may be distracting potential users from the larger potential offered to staff and students by readily accessible and more financially affordable hardware and software. We offer advice to those considering the utility of SDC in meeting specific needs including support of students in distributed professional/clinical placements, research student supervision and. curriculum design and management across multiple locations.
