Abstract

Is it possible to build a virtual community for teaching and learning where students have opportunities for instructor and peer interaction? In this article, Wendy Cowan and Mark Gale describe such a community at Athens State University, where the college of education faculty designed a set of courses so that students had multiple choices for attending weekly virtual classroom sessions--the types of interactive sessions that students in a face-to-face class would enjoy. "Having it their way" and the virtual classroom sessions helped students both fit their coursework into their busy schedules and become more engaged with the class. At the same time, faculty members' satisfaction with the courses increased, as did their motivation to improve their teaching and technical skills. The authors conclude that good software and "power users" are also essential in making such a course design work.
