Abstract

The principal aim of this pilot study was to explore the development of students' information literacy skills as they completed annotated bibliographies related to a topic in educational psychology. One challenge facing postsecondary educators is to encourage students to conduct comprehensive on-line searches of resources related to course assignments. Thirteen graduate students in educational psychology were asked to compile a web-based, annotated bibliography in lieu of writing a traditional term paper. Self and peer assessments were administered and revealed that students do not profess to have a search strategy in mind prior to starting their on-line research, that they do in fact develop strategies to streamline their search efforts, and that they report an increase in their comfort level using on-line databases as a result of having completed an annotated bibliography. Implications for postsecondary instruction and information literacy are discussed.
