Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to set the stage for future discussions on an expanded definition of the term interaction as applied to web-based instruction. The classic definition may be constraining and reductive in that it does not consider the multiplicity of interactions possible within a web course virtual environment. The field of distributed cognition can illuminate the number of interactions that may be considered. A brief overview of distributed cognition is given. Cole and Engestrom's modified mediated triangle is presented prior to suggesting modification of that triangle to reflect the distribution of cognition over the tools and interactions found in web-based courses.
