Abstract

Many institutions have developed educational programs that provide a continuum of totally on-campus courses, supplementary Web-enhanced courses, and completely online courses (Pittinsky, 2001). Educators who have tried both approaches realize that neither the traditional lecture format nor the distance education approach is appropriate for every student, every teacher, and every course. This leads us to a third option, blended learning. This paper will describe blended learning and compare the retention rates and success of students enrolled in three sections of a blended course to students who have completed the same course in a traditional classroom setting and in courses that were taught completely online.
