Abstract
Electronic mail (e-mail), a computer-mediated communica-tion (CMC) technology, has become a common and inexpen-sive way to provide distant communication and learning. This study investigated (a) the appropriateness of CMC in distance learning and (b) the opinions of students and in-structors towards the use of CMC in instruction. The partici-pants were college students in the USA learning Spanish and communicating with college students in Mexico by way of e-mail for 10 weeks. Data collection included e-mail messag-es, surveys, and interviews. The study indicated that CMC produced immediate benefits for distance learning and that the students and the instructor were in favor of the use of CMC in instruction. A follow-up study was conducted one year after the initial study was completed. The results of the follow-up study supported the initial findings.
