At the decade of the 90's the use of the Personal Computer - PC, became common due to the fall of its price. It turned out to be an object not only used by great companies or enterprises but also by the common citizen. The spread of PC's all over the world and its connection through networks, Internet and Ethernets, made this equipment a mean of communication used by people from different parts of the world. This achievement enabled a faster and even more effective communication (e.g. chat, e-mail, net-meetings, etc) . Many were the areas that benefited from the spread of PC's and the new Information Technologies (IT) implicated, namely the areas of education and formation courses. While some years ago a blackboard and chalk would be absolutely necessary in a classroom in order to provide knowledge, nowadays thanks to IT the teachers may use hardware and software equipment which allow them to teach the same amount of contents in a smaller period of time (in just one class); it also allows them to exemplify the contents through simulations or practical experiments. Therefore, we can say that these new technologies facilitate the transmission of knowledge among teachers and students. With Internet and due to the growing necessities of the common citizen, nowadays is possible and it is being even more stimulated the long distance learning; this has been one of the emergent concerns of the latest scientific meetings . This practise makes possible to provide knowledge from a long distance place, since it is complemented with bibliographic and logistic support. The students may be worker-students, former students or elderly people which aim is to recycle their acquired knowledge. Updating is essential in technological courses, as it is a fact that technology develops very fast; this fastness makes new demands of recycling to technicians in order to avoid the loss of competitiveness and becoming obsolete. Thereby, it is more common to hear about long distance learning , using IT (as it is the case of some virtual Universities ). In this paper we will provide a summary of several techniques we are aware of, for long distance learning with IT; namely, some which are being used at Escola Superior de Tecnologia de Castelo Branco . With this paper we also intend to present the actual state of this kind of education and predict what its nearest future will be like. We will also refer to some strategies to improve education and attract students to Informatics Engineering and Informatics Technology Engineering courses; both courses are ministered at Castelo Branco - Portugal.
