Abstract
This paper seeks to discuss possible approaches through which semiotics can be applied to the World Wide Web seen as a multimedia; or, in other words, possible approaches through which Web-sites and Web-pages can be studied and designed from a semiotic point of view. The aim of the paper is thus to outline a coherent theoretical, methodological, and analytical framework for the study and design of Web-documents based on semiotics. The concepts dealt with include: signs, hyper-signs, codes, semiosis, icons, symbols, indexes, paradigms, syntagms, metaphor and metonymy.
