Abstract
"All students will leave grades 4, 8, and 12 having demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter including English, mathematics, science, foreign languages . . .” so says Goals 2000. We live in New Mexico, a state where a majority of the population is of Hispanic origin and yet we have no systematic program for teaching a second language in our schools. As in most other states, we rely heavily on teacher, parent, or student inspiration to lead us in the direction of second language proficiency. Some of our schools and districts are beginning to push toward achieving our language proficiency goal even though not all the participants are proficient in another language themselves. We are using technology to bridge the gap between the desire to teach and the ability to teach.
