Abstract

This presentation describes the creation and implementation of a Reading While Listening (RWL) program for university first–year English students at a private university in Japan. The program was developed to address a number of problems Japanese students have regarding reading and listening in English: focused attention on individual words rather than the syntax and semantics of the written text, little use of contextual cues, and few opportunities to listen to spoken English at length. The presenters will explain the theory and practice of program, and the Moodle module that keeps records of student progress. The unique features of the program: self-access to materials, automatic grading and promotion of students, and on-line testing and record keeping will be highlighted. The presentation will conclude with the first-year results of the program along with some of the administrative and logistical problems encountered.
