Abstract
Research has clearly documented the challenges faced by students in developing understandings and explanations of astronomy phenomena (Bailey &Slater, 2003; Kavanagh, Agan, & Sneider, 2005; Plummer & Krajcik, 2010). Work by the National Research Council (1996) confirmed that adults and children lack a science-based understanding of the central fundamental concepts of astronomy. U.S. K-12 students have also declined in the kinds of science understandings necessary to competently enter STEM professions using today's technology or become teachers to prepare future scientists.
