Abstract

This study investigated the effects of vocabulary acquisition on tourism English when university students participated in the creation of an itinerary in a web-based multimedia environment. Ninety-two students with four different college specialties taking the Freshman English course in a private university in Northern Taiwan participated in this study. The subjects were asked to study an English text of San Francisco city with pictures and links posted on the World Wide Web. They then were required to match forty-eight target vocabulary words with corresponding Chinese annotations on a printed paper. The data were analyzed through percentage calculation based on pretest and posttest. The results were focused on three themes: (a) the average increase of vocabulary words for all subjects; (b) the differences in the performance of vocabulary acquisition among the four colleges; and (c) differences in the performance of vocabulary acquisition between males and females. At the end of the paper, there were instructional suggestions with regard to research results.
