Abstract

This paper explicates the process of integrating a social learning platform - Xplana - with a traditional learning management system (Blackboard) in an online graduate course. Features of the Xplana platform and its ability to support meaningful learning are described in detail. Students participated in online discussion about their initial perceptions of Xplana and later in a discussion comparing Blackboard and Xplana. Content analysis of these conversations along with survey data revealed that while this group of students preferred Blackboard as the primary learning management system, they recognized Xplana’s potential for accessing and sharing resources with others.
