Abstract

Children and young people spending time in hospital for their health care face significant challenges in terms of their continued education. The hospital as an out-of-school setting provides opportunities for innovation to develop this setting as a site that is conducive to children’s learning. This paper reports on the contribution that the provision of over 100 netbooks on the wards of a leading paediatric hospital had towards developing a learning culture in that hospital. 71 participants were recruited and completed surveys detailing their use and opinion of netbooks (and other portable computers) within the hospital. The results highlight the importance of access to both social media and informal learning opportunities for these young people and the capacity of a children’s hospital to create an environment where learning stays relevant to their lives.
