Abstract

This paper discusses the new expertise in the knowledge society and introduces the approaches to teacher education that have been employed at the Teacher Education Centre of Tampere University of Applied Sciences in order to answer the challenge. Teacher education has a central role in bridging the gap between education and knowledge society working life; educating future teachers enhances new educational practices in a wider scale. Previous research indicates that future teachers need help in understanding the knowledge society competence requirements, familiarizing themselves with new technology and applying these in their work. Tampere Teacher Education Centre has integrated a wide range of Web 2.0 tools in the study program in various ways. The positive experiences gained have encouraged the teacher educators to design an international forum for dialogue, collaboration and professional development of education professionals in Second Life.
