Abstract

The paper reports a pilot study in developing an online resource to train a group of 130 associate degree students. The web-enabled model, called WEST, provides a user-friendly environment to self-learn and self-assess essay type answers. A typical exercise or activity on WEST contains an essay question. After submitting their answer online, the learners are required to respond to a simple questionnaire as part of the self-assessment and evaluation process. Students receive their grade and feedback on their performance in real time. Results show that students had diversified views towards the WEST model. Motivation, inter alia, is clearly one of the most crucial issues in self-learning and self-assessment environment.
