Abstract
While many have speculated on the significant impact of 3-D virtual worlds on teaching and learning, our understanding of their instructional uses is still limited. This paper presents an exploratory qualitative analysis of data from a graduate educational technology course that was taught in the Second Life 3-D multi-user virtual world in summer 2009. The primary purpose of the research is to explore students’ learning experiences in a 3-D virtual world. Our data sources include video recordings of in-world class interactions and students’ artifacts such as student blogs, and asynchronous discussion postings. For data analysis, we use constant comparative as a tool for inductive analysis. Findings are understood through the frameworks of social presence and socialization for online learning.
