Abstract

To enable graduates of the medical professions to effectively prescribe potentially dangerous drugs to patients with safety and confidence, students should access drug information that is integrated into their programme of study. The eDrug system developed by the University of Southampton (UoS) is such an eLearning resource. It was originally created by the University of Edinburgh and adapted to meet the specifications of Southampton Student Formulary and its Bachelor of Medicine programme. The original system provided general drug information and drug searching by keywords facility. The UoS system enhances it by associating the drugs with corresponding teaching material on the online timetable. Disease areas and teaching material are cross-referenced in the drug entries enabling learning in diverse subject areas. This enables students to access not only the drug-related teaching materials from the eDrug system but also the teaching materials associated with the drugs in the timetable.
