Abstract

For the past four years, students in a graduate course in educational technology in the USA, who are K-12 teachers, have been establishing educational collaborations between their own classrooms and those in other countries. They identify a partner teacher and classroom via sites such as Epals.com, IEARN.org, and Globalschoolhouse.net. They plan an educational unit with their partners that involves students from both classrooms. They also analyze their projects via online discussions and papers, considering practical and logistical issues, cultural assumptions, gender dynamics, and equity issues. Teachers who have been through the process then give advice to graduate students in future classes via videoconferencing. This presentation describes this model. It discusses the assignment posed to the graduate students and gives examples of their resulting projects. It also describes the graduate students’ learning from these collaborations, including what they would do differently in a future version of the project.
