The Emotional Gap in Virtual Online Environments

Current virtual learning environments are successfully delivering the functional needs required by the Institutions that launched them and by the faculty that is there to facilitate the learning experience. However, they have failed to be suggestive, engaging, motivating and exciting (as learning processes should be), a gap that needs to be accounted for, if we wish for people to learn and be motivated to learn. Online learning spaces are offering classrooms in which students and faculty can interact, communication tools, filing systems, accesses to libraries and other resources, directories and interactions, amongst many others, but are far from triggering positive emotions and feelings. We will present a best practice of how integrating the emotional dimension can help improve overall satisfaction and motivation levels, and how going beyond current functionalities can be even more critical and effective than the functionalities themselves.
