Abstract

As the ubiquity of geospatial technologies such as Google Earth, Global Positioning Systems (GPS), GIS, GPS-enabled digital cameras and cell phones provide easy access to geo-tagging and adding geo-location to digital stories and social network media, in-service and pre-service teacher education instruction must incorporate and model their use. With new web-based applications, ease-of-use and accessibility thresholds have become more accessible for schools. In a combination summer offering of graduate and/or Continuing Education Units credit, participants moved from community-based games such as geocaching to constructing geo-located digital archives for a school-museum partnership. Expanded web-based resources and tutorials have facilitated geospatial technology integration. Direct curricular integration in middle and high school settings are discussed.
