Abstract

Books are an essential medium in our learning environments yet there are many other technologies being developed which provide learners with great benefits. In this research the value of the book as a medium is considered looks at and how hypertext structures can be applied to books so that this non-linear reading environment can aid learners so that they gain the educational benefits of both media. This is done through examining books which already use hypertext type functionality in their structure and discusses how this aligns with the principles of both Constructivist Learning Theory and Cognitive Flexibility Theory. The analysis of these books shows that while some books successfully utilise the educational benefits of hypertext these advantages can still be better implemented.
