Abstract
This paper examines the potential benefits associated with the use of social technologies in the online education environment. The paper suggests a mechanism by which this benefit may occur. It is proposed that the use of social technologies may foster the student teacher relationship which in turn affects student academic outcomes. Literature is presented that establishes the importance of student teacher relationships to student learning outcomes. The results of a student social networking survey conducted by the author suggest that social networking can build relationships. If online social networking can enhance relationships, including the student teacher relationship then the conclusion may be drawn that the academic achievement traditionally associated with enhanced student faculty relationships may be realized in the online learning environment
