Abstract
The technique of usability interviewing is described from within the context of a multiphase, exploratory research project guided by the design-based research approach. Usability interviewing is distinguished from other types of usability evaluations including tests and inspections. An inexpensive setup is illustrated that proved useful for usability interviewing at remote locations during the study. Participant selection, data collection, data analysis, and results relevant to usability portions of the study are presented. The paper concludes with a section on usability interviewing challenges and solutions.
