Abstract

This research considers the use of multi-touch display technology to facilitate collaboration in the classroom. These large format displays facilitate collaboration due to their provision of a shared digital workspace and their ability to register multiple simultaneous user inputs. However, if this technology is to be used effectively in the classroom a number of issues need to be considered such as; 1) the learning activity context, 2) learning theory in particular collaboration theory, 3) appropriate physical and interface form factors, 4) structured collaboration strategies, and 5) monitoring and assessment issues. The discussion of these issues also includes a discussion of the design features of the proto-type of a multi-touch system for educational purposes. Final potential avenues of further research are outlined.
