Abstract

Increasingly cross-border collaboration in the implementation of educational programmes is being recognized as an important strategy to ensure quality educational opportunities. Such regional collaborations provide students from varying environments and at different stages of development with a wider learning experience and a broader perspective on the key issues under study. This paper provides insights from two iterations of cross-border courses in the Asia Pacific region and examines the student experience of learning in disaster management. The students’ learning experience arose through the Asia Pacific Initiative, which is a framework of extensive cooperation amongst universities and research institutions in the region. The Initiative was launched at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002. The outcomes of the initiative are not only improving the student experience of learning across the region, but are providing an important focus on the student experience of learning using combinations of ICTs through video conferencing and online learning.
