Abstract

PrimaryAccess is a web-based tool that allows middle and high-school students to create short “Ken Burns” style documentaries using historical primary source documents in a classroom environment. The nature of the modern classroom does not permit as much individualized feedback on writing assignments as would be optimal. To test the feasibility of incorporating Automated Essay Scoring (AES) with PrimaryAccess as a formative assessment tool, 145 essays were hand-scored, and then compared to the scores obtained from Educational Testing Service’s Criterion AES system. The results were encouraging with very high correlation and reliability factors, offering the possibility of new forms of formative assessment.
