Abstract

In this paper, the authors report on the early stages of a project in which student-teachers attending the authors’ institution are required to enter an Immersive Virtual World (IVW) for their elective module in Development Education. The paper outlines the implementation of the IVW Second Life, and identifies and discusses the key areas for promoting engagement and immersion; it then describes the way in which these are incorporated into the Development Education module. Among the implementation issues addressed, informed by the current literature and experiences on pilot rollouts, are: identifying the readiness of the target group; creating an awareness of the potential for the use of IVWs in education; scaffolding the experiences involved in learning Second Life; and allowing the learners to explore the potential benefits of IVWs in education.
