Abstract

The unlimited potential of wikis – a form of social software that allows users to create and edit web pages – as a medium to deliver distance learning college courses provides a learning environment that engages and empowers online learners. This paper will situate the use of wikis in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) framework that explains three overlapping elements of effective online learning: teaching, social, and cognitive presences. The authors describe a study conducted to examine student perceptions of the elements’ presence in a wiki-based, graduate-level online course and discuss results indicating that the course satisfactorily included the essential elements.
