Abstract
: Despite all the hype and institutional investment the adoption, diffusion and exploitation of e-Learning by educational institutions has been disappointing, failing to revolutionise education and training as predicted by a number of commentators. Many studies confirm that eLearning applications are small-scale initiatives developed in isolation from institutional infrastructure relying on the efforts of local enthusiasts’ and goodwill of tutors rather than a widespread, integrated, coherent, intuitional phenomena. This paper reports on the factors that have inhibited the widely predicted growth in eLearning identified in 109 research articles. Four major themes have been identified as having the most significant impact on the eLearning initiatives; need to consider contextual factors, need to integrate eLearning, consider the dissenting views of the academics and development of a coherent strategy.
