Abstract

Online courses based on constructivist pedagogies have used discussion for creating interactive learning environments. Using wikis for collaborative writing provides educators another powerful tool for supporting collaborative student learning online. Wikis are easy to set up on free hosting sites such as Wikispaces and PBwiki. However, as with all instructional activities, effective instructional wiki use does not happen without appropriate planning and instructional support. Students need appropriate structure and support to learn through collaborative wiki development. This paper, based on our use of wikis with both undergraduate and graduate online courses, considers their instructional benefits, and details suggestions for structuring instructional activities to promote collaborative writing and learning.
