Abstract
The use of Open Source Learning System (OSLS) is a paradigm shift in education (Courant and Griffiths, 2006). OSLS provides an alternative and affordable technology solution to PK -20 educators and students in a Collaboration and Learning Environment (CLE) that otherwise would not have the technology capacity to support CLE. It has the power and potential to allocate sources to provide a strong and affordable learning network accessible to all PK-20 educators. As fairly new phenomenon, how OSLS is implemented in schools to improve teaching and learning is still elusive. The purpose of this study is to report an evaluation outcome of an Open Learning Partnership (OLP)-Sakai pilot project by 1) describing the interface of technology integration in an OSLS environment and 2) examining its impact on technology use for k-20 educators. The findings suggest that the TPACK (Technology Pedagogy and Knowledge) model (Mishra & Koehler, 2006) can be used as a guiding principle in OSLS implementation and evaluation to enhance technology use and collaboration to improve teaching and learning.
