Abstract

This paper describes ways that primary historical resources may be used to help students engage in historical reasoning and research. The Presidential Timeline (www.presidentialtimeline.org) is a web site that provides a single point of access to an ever-growing selection of digitized assets from the collections of the twelve Presidential Libraries of the United States National Archives. These assets include documents, photographs, audio recordings, and video relating to the events of the presidents’ lives. The project also includes a number of educational activities designed to help students engage in historical research and role-playing activities using primary resources to foster a better understanding of presidential decision-making and past historical events. The presentation will share the experience of the project and describe the ways the primary resources are used in schools.
