The basic components of many instructional design models are based on ADDIE. These fundamentals form a problem-solving pattern, which can be customized to encourage eclectic approaches. This paper discusses the need to highlight reuse in modelling instructional design. The importance of reuse in modelling instructional design is exemplified in the CogMoLab architecture and a 3-dimensional modelling environment for authoring tools. The aim of the 3-dimensional modelling environment is to help the instructor-designer build a model of the conceptual space. It provides a representation means for ontological engineering and modelling, thus enabling reflection, iterative review and validation of instructional design prior to the design and development of actual web pages. Metadata is used to enable mapping of the learner’s navigational environment consistent with the instructor’s conceptual design.
