Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the application of an online learning which included collaborative learning strategies in undergraduate classes of a pre-service teacher training program. With the computer-based and multimedia enhanced lessons, students were required to work collaboratively to design a self-paced lesson in Microsoft PowerPoint. A questionnaire was designed to ascertain whether online collaborative learning has an effect on students’ motivation in an undergraduate educational technology class. Students’ perceptions and attitudes toward collaborative learning were also examined, and their comments related to online collaborative learning were analyzed. Students’ attitudes were predominately positive toward online learning with collaboration, and they named frequent communication and clarity of instructions and announcements as critical elements of successful online learning. The analysis structures and research questions of this study were replicated from the work of Ku, Lohr & Cheng (2006).
