Abstract

The Hindi Urdu Flagship at the University of Texas is an innovative program in which students are expected to achieve Superior proficiency in Hindi and Urdu during their four-year undergraduate career while majoring in various fields. In the cyber-project in Hindi Urdu, a large number of questions were asked of native speakers and the responses were placed on the website in the Flash format. Some of the questions deal directly with language, such as questions about honorifics and use of vocabulary; other questions deal with cultural phenomena, and various social customs, such as marriage and eating habits. Transcripts and notes are included. These video discussions are used at various levels of proficiency, especially the advanced and superior levels. The importance of the project is that for the first time, students are expected to reach a level of language ability which will enable them to make professional use of Hindi and Urdu in their chosen profession.
