Abstract
Computer games can be used to engage students in learning but are often too inflexible or sophisticated to suit a variety of learning needs and school contexts. Murder under the Microscope fills this gap and provides a model for learning for students in upper primary and lower secondary school. It is an internet-based environmental mystery game in which students are presented with an environmental problem they have to solve in teams, within a limited time period. The problem-solving scenario facilitates the implementation of a constructivist approach to the underpinning pedagogy. Success of the project is evidenced by the high numbers of teachers and students who return to the project each year. The Murder under the Microscope project shows how two seemingly opposite characteristics, competition and collaboration, can lead to quality learning outcomes. The conference presentation will demonstrate examples from the website and video excerpts of students involved in the project.
