Abstract

Virtual World (VW) or Computer-based simulated environment, have taken the internet-connected real world by storm. Some virtual worlds like SecondLife (although not a game, per se) and SimsOnline (with gaming elements) are being used by many institutions for educational purposes. The youths are particularly enamored with this three-dimensional-like (3D-like) VW because it allows them to interact with the virtual elements and communicate (possibly) through Voice-Over-Internet-Protocol (VOIP) with friends, anytime anywhere in the world. The easy-access to VW and its simulated real-world situations (including gaming capabilities) have attracted educators to examine its affordances for learning. This presentation describes learning science with single-player 3-D (game-based) VW, as a learning environment to engage learners, using an authoring software application known as “Monja Kids”. This paper also discusses some learning outcomes, and gives suggestions for future implementations.
