Abstract

We have studied the effect of goals on student use of educational software. Our approach focuses on the processes students employ to learn concepts from educational software. We build models of student user behavior based on audit trail data, collected automatically as students use educational software, and on qualitative data derived from direct observation and self-reported user behavior. We have examining student behavior in different educational contexts, using two different computer-based educational learning tools, and relate this behavior to educational goals. We have found that student goals are often distinct from educator goals, and show some of the ways in which student goals and the educational context affect how students use software. We also discuss potential pitfalls in interpreting automatically collected data, and the importance of incorporating domain knowledge into models.
