Abstract

World-wide universities are concerned about success rates of first-year students. Numerous international studies have proved that both academic and non-academic factors play a role in academic performance. Consequently various interventions have been launched to address these factors. It has also been proven scientifically that certain interventions do indeed influence these factors and academic performance positively. This paper focuses on the non-academic factors and it describes a computerized tracking system that is used firstly to identify the non-academic needs of first-year students and secondly to provide individualized multimedia interventions to address these needs. Personal Development Plans (PDP’s) are compiled for each student. Results from a prediction model that identify the critical non-academic factors that influence academic success are used to fine-tune these PDP’s. The multimedia interventions are described in detail and implementation experiences are shared.
