Abstract
This Best Practices session describes a web site that was created utilizing innovative technologies to accelerate students’ learning of Japanese language and culture and to motivate them to become self-propelling learners. This site called JOSHU (Japanese Online Self-Help Utility) was initially created by one of our students as her honors project and has been expanded and managed by the primary presenter. JOSHU contains: 1) grammar exercises and grammar references which include video clips and animations created by students as collaborative projects for their Japanese courses and; 2) a variety of interactive Kana, Kanji and vocabulary flashcards, exercises, and learning games; and 3) Japanese culture and customs pages with slideshows created by students, digital photos, video images, and other media, all of which are designed to specifically satisfy the needs of students in our program. The presenters will discuss the benefits of the projects as well as problems encountered.
