Abstract

This focus of this paper is to consider potential uses of Virtual World technology for academic purposes. Research is needed on the use of Virtual Worlds in order to identify and describe possible classroom applications. This paper discusses what virtual environments are and some of their limitations. Two virtual world technologies are described that were implemented as part of classroom activities in a graduate-level instructional technology course. An overview of the activities and initial results gathered from the class participants are presented. Class participants were asked for their perceived successes and limitations of the two applications. This paper also proposes creating an interest group whose mission would be to generate educational standards for future development of Virtual World technology and an implementation strategy of this new technology. This paper also discusses implications for virtual worlds in their current state and provides a call for future projects to be developed according to standards created by an international committee.
