Abstract

This paper examines the use of Laura, an animated intelligent agent, in a Spanish language course. Laura is designed to converse with students both in speech and text form, help them learn new vocabulary, and practice their conversation skills in Spanish. More specifically, we examine the intelligent agent’s impact on learner performance, investigate learners’ attitudes towards learning with the agent, and finally explore how learners use the conversational ability of the agent system. Findings from the study contribute to the current literature as minimal research has addressed the use of intelligent agents in language learning. Furthermore, since the conversation is not predetermined, learners are able to actively engage in the learning process as they have the opportunity to practice and enhance their knowledge at their own time, space, and pace by engaging in discourse with the agent.
