Abstract

Understanding epistemological and cultural impasses in cross-cultural partnership projects is becoming essential for the effective transfer of innovative teaching and learning methods and development of trusting relationships between participating institutions. In this paper, we share the experience of a distance education partnership project between two teams representing Azerbaijani and American higher education institutions. The case study reported in this paper was undertaken as an action research focused on identifying the challenges that impacted the collaborative work and examining them in the context of socio-cultural differences relevant to the issues encountered. The authors discuss the issues related to differences in applying a learner-centered pedagogy, sustaining collaboration, and managing learning process and introduce the strategies for addressing those issues. The study seeks to advance educators’ understanding of the critical aspects of cross-cultural collaboration in online learning environments.
