Abstract

Faculty sometimes have difficulty to envisage the possibilities of implementing blended teaching and learning modes in a residential higher education institution. To illustrate the multi-faceted nature of blended teaching, we developed a visual diamond metaphor. The data illustrated in the metaphor represent five diverse case studies of lecturers who successfully implemented blended learning. We approached both gathering of data and development of the metaphor from the perspective that teaching practice embodies teaching philosophy. The metaphor demonstrates added value through the choice of modes for presentation of learning material, interaction with students and assessment. This metaphor will be used for induction of new lecturers and supporting faculty wishing to optimise their teaching practice, or to overcome obstacles to optimal teaching and learning. Due to the highly individual nature of the models, lecturers will be able to develop their own diamond as a teaching, learning and assessment plan for each course.
