Abstract

This paper explores the issues surrounding the high dropout rate in online courses offered to teachers for professional development and certification in gifted education. ProjectLoggED On delivered online, case-based and interactive online instruction to over 500 teachers. While the program met with many successes, the dropout rate was also quite high. Does this particular subset of online learners, teachers enrolled in professional development and add-on certificate programs, have unique qualities and needs as an online learning population, or do they share similar characteristics with online learners, at large? Was their something inherent in the design or delivery that was a contributing factor for noncompletion? Was technology a deterrent for these older learners? In this study we gain wisdom and insight from these online learners as we seek to uncover what can be learned from those that we lose?
