Abstract

This study examines the different ways in which postgraduate male and female students make use of wiki technology during online collaborative group projects. A module called Digital culture, a component of a Masters in Interactive Multimedia, is examined based on the activity of two separate cohorts over successive years. The module was taught using a Social Constructivist approach, the wiki being a component of a Moodle virtual learning environment. Overall, the amount of wiki usage increased during the 2007-8 module, possibly due to increasing user familiarity with the technology. The investigation finds females make greater use of the wikis than males by looking at the amount of edits made to the wiki pages using the histories feature. Conclusions are draw on these findings suggesting wikis may be more effective when used with female rather than male learners and an alternative means of motivation may be required to address this. Suggestions for avenues of further study are made.
